upgrade Debian Jessie to Stretch

Hooray, Debian 9 Codename Stretch is released.

How to upgrade from Debian 8 Jessie to Debian 9 Stretch safely. If you haven’t used backports or apt-pinning, this should be a no-brainer.

Have a look at your Debian Version before and after the upgrade.

~# cat /etc/debian_version
8.8
~# cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 8 (jessie)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="8"
VERSION="8 (jessie)"
ID=debian
HOME_URL="http://www.debian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://www.debian.org/support"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.debian.org/

Update your system before doing anything.

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

Replace jessie with stretch in /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib

deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib

deb http://security.debian.org jessie/updates main contrib

to

deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian stretch main contrib

deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian stretch-updates main contrib

deb http://security.debian.org stretch/updates main contrib

Do the upgrade!

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

Check your Debian Version also after the upgrade

~# cat /etc/debian_version
9.0
~# cat /proc/version
Linux version 4.4.67-1-pve (root@nora) (gcc version 4.9.2 (Debian 4.9.2-10) ) #1 SMP PVE 4.4.67-89 (Thu, 8 Jun 2017 15:12:11 +0200)
root@cdn:~# cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="9"
VERSION="9 (stretch)"
ID=debian
HOME_URL="https://www.debian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="https://www.debian.org/support"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.debian.org/"

voila, looks fine to me
